Forefoot pain applies to anywhere from and around the ball of the foot extending to your toes. The pain may also be present on the top of your foot or around the sides of the forefoot.
Symptoms may be caused by many different reasons and can therefore differ by each condition. However most commonly the pain can be described as a sharp pain with weight-bearing or could feel like a burning, tingly, numb sensation.
Causes of Forefoot pain:
- Stress fracture
- Plantar plate injury
- Morton’s Neuroma
- Interdigital bursitis
These conditions may be caused due to:
- Trauma to the foot
- Wearing inappropriate footwear with poor support, narrow toebox or high heels
- Walking barefoot
- Prolonged standing and weight-bearing
- Increased levels of physical activity
- Biomechanical imbalances and uneven pressure distribution along the foot
Treatment at home to alleviate symptoms:
- RICE- (Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate)
- Topical Voltaren or NSAID’s (Non-Steroid Anti-inflammatory drugs)
- Avoiding barefoot and inappropriate footwear such as jandals and heels
